Just for fun!

How many drumset brands have you owned/played regularly? Trying them out in a store doesn't count (SHANE!)...

Ah, Shane, you did something I didn't -- you included which kits had matching snares.

2 - Mapex Mars had a chrome 6.5x14 (ewwww)
3 - Rogers Tower had a matching 5.5x14 Tower snare (blue sparkle)
4 - Pearl MRX red had a matching 5.5x14 snare -- free floater!
10 - Mapex M series had a matching snare that I recovered at the same time as the kit, but instead of using blue satin flame like the rest of the kit, I went LIME GREEN. It was quite a statement.

Started out with a Kent set back in '63 or 64 - after getting out of the service bought a brand new set of Black Rogers in '72 and am still playing it. I've been lucky, living in band houses have twice had break ins and the other players have had their stuff ripped off (lived in the Washington DC area). Thankfully the drums are too bulky to steal and I guess they didn't think about the cost of cymbals. The set still looks and sounds great.

I'd love to have some of the high end drums that are out now, DW or Yamaha but I'd have to win the lottery to justify buying it.

Hey rusty,
Even if you bought a new kit, I don't think the DW sets would make you happy, unless you want a really different kit from your Rogers. I'm not into DW's myself (yes, I said it), they are such a rock-oriented sound. Not that I dislike rock, just that I want a really versatile kit since I play many styles.

You should check out tempusdrums.com. I have a set of these and am incredibly happy. Go on some of the other message boards and see what people say about them. I know there are people in the New England area that play them.

Oh, and they cost about half what a set of DWs would.

I'll give it a try:
1) 1963 Ludwig Maple w/ blue sparkle wrap-Steel Leedy snare- mish mash of very used Zilodjian cymbals- all pieces acquired one by one as I could afford them over three year period with Help of my Dad from Beale street pawn shops. For an 8 yr old, I was in hog heaven.
2) Used 1990 Pearl Blx kit in sheer blue- Still own- Finish is still one of the best I've ever seen on a mass produced set: 10x10, 12x10, 13x11, 14x12, an 18 x16 floor tom better suited as a large lamp table rather than a drum, and a killer 16x 24 bass.
3) Pearl MRX in #126 Emerald Mist- Principal gigging kit-Still own and use regularly- Have 11 separate pieces in various sizes, use no more than 6 to 7 at atime, choice depends on style of music I'll be playing and what I think sounds best at the time.
4) Pearl MMX 7 piece kit in red wine. Played 3 days, Then boxed back up-Still in brand new condition. Haven't gotten around to selling yet. Obviously, not an MMX fan.
5) -PEARL MMX- 4 piece ShellPack in midnite fade bought new as investment for $875, added 6.5X14 20 lug MMX snare. Boxes never opened.
6) Pearl Masterworks 5 piece kit in Radioactive Burst bought new as investment at substatial discount- 2 ply mahogany-4 ply maple. Never set up or played-These drums are gorgeous.
7) I have two seven piece Yamaha Maple Custom Absolute Kits- One in Honey Yellow, the other in Piano black.(still in boxes- never played)

I also have a 7 piece Yamaha Birch Custom Absolute Kit in Piano BLack, and a recently acquired 6 piece Yamaha Birch Absolute Nouveau In Blue Sparkle I just acquired from my drum guru Shane.
9) 8 piece Tama Starclassic Maple in Honey Maple that sounds as nice as any kit I've ever Played,
10) Finally, 2 seven piece yamaha Maple Custom kits-One in vintage, the other in black maple stain- both in like new condition.
After I get around to selling 2 or 3 of the above kits, I'm planning to purchase a 2005 Tama Exotix kit and a Pearl Masterworks kit from Shane.

I need to... Maybe The Drum Shop could open up a Birmingham, Alabama, branch to help me unload some of these, I'm sure Shane wouldn't mind spending 2 or 3 days a week in Birmingham supervising the new location.
