Specifically one with an african mahogany bass drum shell. I'm looking to purchase a new acoustic kit but I'd like to do so drum by drum in hopes of giving myself more flexibility in terms of sound. I've heard (read: looked up online while window shopping) that african mahogany produces a very rich bass tone and I'm interested in trying it out.

Thus far my experiance has been with electronic drums and the rather entry level kits of a few of my friends.

sorry for the wall of text

No, but we have 5 Reference kits here, which have maple and mahogany kicks, which sound better to me that the all mahogany kick.

Marl,
I have a Reference kit. Don't know if you've gotten your kit yet or not (I'm new here), but it is awesome. The mahogany takes it down a notch--in pitch! I went from a power-tom Tama Artstar II kit to a new Reference. My old kick drum is 24x16 and the Ref is 22x18. Awesome. Low and thunderous. Worth the money.

Now, if you want the options to customize, surely Masterworks is the way to go. The Ref, however, combines many common MW features off-the-shelf, as it were. The wood choices in the Ref make sense and sound great. As well, the many finishes offered look pretty nice, though I've seen better. But MW is all about options.

I'm sold. Haven't played Pearl in 20 years, but I am a convert! I even gave up a C&C endorsement to BUY my Reference. The science is (seemingly) that sound. And the sound is truly wonderful. My world recently changed to Pearl. And under the mic's, they are warm and perfect.
