I have been reading that there has been a giant upsurge of companies making acrylic drums in 2006. In fact, acrylics look poised to be more popular now that anytime in the past.

Zickos and especially RCI offer shells that are welded, not tabbed. They are thicker, stronger and more resonant than anything before.

Companies that offer acrylics right now:
Sonor (X-ray)
DDrum (diode)
Ludwig (vistalite)
Tama (Mirage)
Zickos
Fibes (Crystalite)
RCI
Custom makers as well (Some use the cheaper tabbed gold n. times shell, others use the welded RCI shell)

I have heard nothing but raves about new kits like the DDrum diode and Sonor X-ray. Phrases like "thunder" and "They sound huge" were common. These are a far cry in quality, and sound from ever before. They seem to be as much improved over the original single headed vistalites as modern maple drums are over 70's wood shells.

Anyone care to comment on the sound of any modern acrylic kits?

We have the X ray, a Diode, and a used Bonham Ludwig tribute kit. They sound great. Loud!
