I'm going to give you another Drummers opinion. There are a lot of great drums on the market today. Pearl is one of them, they make great sounding drums. However if I was going to buy another kit I would get Drum Workshop or Yamaha Maple Absolutes. Out of all the drums I have hit walking around the drum shop, these two companys stand out the most to my ear. Spaun is another newer company that makes great sounding drum kits. Go in , listen and compare , your ears will help you decide.

Joe's right, there are a ton of options and you should sit down extensively with a kit before you buy it, especially if you're spending a great deal of money on it. I just picked up a Pearl BRX--on the recommendations of drummer friends of mine as well as the guys at the drum shop--and am extremely happy with it.

Keep in mind that your volume needs (mics?) as well as how often you gig are factors in this decision. For example, if you're going to be gigging in rough venues, it may be worth looking into a wrapped drum like an MSX or wrapped DW instead of a lacquer finish that may scratch easily.

It's your call, go down to the drum shop and tap around. You'll find something you like.

Yeah. I've been kicking myself in the nuts for the past year for trading in my export kit for a snare. I found out the hard way how lacquer kits get scratches fast while playing out. I'm thinkin of saving up for another export kit just for paying out, instead of using my BRX. But it is nice to bring out a very hot looking set to your gigs.

My response is that if you have about 3k to spend, then it's hard to go wrong!
Seriously, I'm quite a fan of Pearl drums. My faves are the BRX, the MRX and MSX. I'm a died in the wool Yamaha guy-plus we have the Maple Absolutes on blowout right now, so I would consider those.

for the money. Pearl has some fantastic sounding drums. The step up from the elx is the session series. smx and sbx (maple or birch). the mounting system, shells etc are top notch. with these drums sound amazing and with your budget, you can definatly add a couple of drums to the shellpack, a double floor mount, etc...I myself am picking one up next week. going with the 3 toms up and 2 down. The yamaha customs are definatly built extremely well and it's the little details that set yamaha apart from the session series as far as hardware goes etc...but for me for the amount of "drum" that you get for the buck....I am going with the pearl session series. Great higher end kit priced to sell Razz

All of the advice you've received so far is excellent. I own a couple of kits, and you can't go wrong with either Pearl or Yamaha. From Pearl, I'd seriously look at the BRX Masters Studio series (I'm right now ordering a new BRX kit from Shane at The Drum Shop)-Excellent drums at a great price. But if this was going to be my one and only kit, I would buy a Yamaha Absolute Maple kit. The Quality of materials and the craftmanship in construction is second to none-not to mention their superb sound. The mounting haredware is among the best in the industry (and easy to use) and the drums are easy (relatively speaking) to tune. Finally, they have consistently maintained excellent resale value. I see that The Drum Shop has one in the Honey Yellow finish for sale-I own one of those kits and the finish is gorgeous. Anyway, good luck in your search!
